Modern Cottage Style: Why We Chose It. How We'll Do It.

Cottage style is really the only logical choice for our house. Being less than 1000 square feet, the light and airy elements of cottage style make sense for the space. Classified by having a casual and romantic atmosphere, typical cottages are a hodge podge of fabrics, finishes, and textures. Modern cottage style, which is what we're going for, has a more polished look.

There are several architectural aspects of our house that are classically cottage. The sloped ceiling in the bathroom, the wooden beam that runs between the kitchen and the dining room, the wall mounted faucet in the kitchen, the clawfoot bathtub, the covered porch, the open cubby-type shelves in the kitchen and the asymetrical structure of the house (the foot door is not centered) are all cottage elements. Even though our house needs a lot of work, it has a lot of character.

Our goal is to embrace the cottage feeling of the house, but not to go too far in the country or shabby chic direction. We'll keep the cubby cabinets and wood beam in the kitchen, and add a farmhouse sink, butcher block countertops and open shelving. But we'll keep it modern with new stainless steel appliances, wine storage, and a modern backsplash. We'll highlight the sloped ceiling in the bathroom by painting it a lighter color than the walls, add a pedestal sink and re-install the home's original clawfoot tub, but we'll keep the paint colors modern and add all new fixtures. We'll wait to expand the super small living room, but we'll make room for our flatscreen.

We're hoping that when we're done, the house will be a wonderful combination of old and new.
