Our Big Fall / Winter Vacation Project

Since I happen to me married to a workaholic who wouldn't call in sick if his eyeballs were on fire, Scott is now being forced to take some of his vacation days before the end of 2010. While discussing the fact that he's never taken two whole weeks off in a row and how he's not sure what to do with himself I, the ever helpful wife, suggested that he use that time to clean out the huge storage shed we have on our property. Scott has been dreaming of turning the space into a music studio since before we moved in. Here's a view of the building and the doomed hot tub from the laundry room back door.

And since I too have big dreams of a hobby space that died when the washer and dryer were too tall to stack in our slanted ceiling laundry room and therefore left no space for a little desk for crafting I'd planned, I too will be moving into the studio as we're calling it and setting up a craft/art space!

While this is really exciting, it's not without trepidation that we embark upon this journey. Our storage shed looks like many people's garages - full to the gills with old cans of paint, holiday storage boxes, all of my art and papermaking crap, boxes of books that don't fit in the house, stuff left behind by the sellers, a ton of toxic cleaners that I purged from the house when we moved in, several e-waste items that need to be taken in for recycling, lots of empty boxes, some tools that have not yet moved over to the fabulous tool storage shed Scott's dad has been building for us, and lot's of other stuff I'm sure I'll be surprised and dismayed to discover once we get started.

Here is a rough outline of what we plan:

1. Remove everything placing things into piles. Things that need to go to the toxics recycling station or ewaste, or Goodwill will go directly into the back of the truck.

2. Once the room is completely empty, sweep and vacuum it out.

3. Carpet the space.

4. Insulate/soundproof. We plan to put in soundproofing between the studs to keep the neighbors happy and also give us some temperature control. We're not planning to drywall yet, but we'll see how we feel once we begin working.

5. Repackage all holiday storage. I really want durable clear boxes that we can clearly label for each holiday. There's a loft bed currently in the space, but the mattress is disgusting and needs to be thrown out. Since we can't imagine really hosting guests out there, we're doing away with use of the loft for sleeping, and instead making that the storage space for our holiday decor etc.

6. Furnish. We will both need desks, we're planning to put a small file cabinet out there, we have more bookshelves in storage that need to come home to hold the extra books and cds that will live in the studio, and we're planning a small living area with a futon just so that we have space if someone does decide they want to use it as a guest house.

So the idea is to create 3 separate spaces. Here are inspiration pics for each.
