Against All Odds

Today we decided to add some storage to the bathroom and went to All American, used our Christmas gift card, and came home with this

It has the typical Ikea-esque box o' random boards and screws, and we set to work to put it together. About 20 things went wrong with this process. First of all, the instructions screamed at us to ignore certain parts and steps lest malfunction be imminent. Okay... Then we got into at least four arguments trying to decode which pieces were tops, bottoms, sides etc.

I basically bailed on the whole process and left Scott to figure it out. He did a fine job.

That is until it came time to put the doors on the thing. Notice how in the photo the doors are nice and even and fit together with a very narrow seam? Well our doors were about two inches apart. I tried adjusting them, Scott tried adjusting them - no dice. After about an hour - YES AN HOUR - of trying, we decided to just put the damn thing in the bathroom and see what happens.

Now, we measured it. We really did. We measured to make sure that it wasn't too tall for the space, and we measured it to make sure it wasn't too wide for the space. Um, no one measured to see if the bottom shelf would sit upon the back of the toilet constantly flushing and teetering back and forth. We missed that one. So we had to think fast. How the hell could we make the cabinet taller? Bricks. Yep. We went outside and grabbed two bricks and set up the cabinet on them. I can't believe it worked, but it did. We then ripped the crappy doors off, and brought in some plants to distract from the, um, brick-ness if you will.

But you can still totally see the bricks. I do like it however and even though we don't have the doors to hide our things behind, I shopped the house and came up with this cute basket I had been using to keep our cloth napkins in. The colors are perfect for the space, so I'm happy. Ignore the two panels of the wainscotting that have slipped down, the scale that needs a new home, and the empty jars on top of the cabinet - we're out of q-tips. So that's how we spent our day off. What do you think?
